teachwire.net/secondary PA R T N E R C O N T E N T 28 Lee Wray-Davies fills us in on why you should lend your support to the The Great Big School Clean “Show that teenagers care about their planet” What is the Great Big School Clean? Between 20th March and 13th April, Eco-Schools – part of Keep Britain Tidy – is calling on young people to help improve the environment on their doorstep by taking part in the Great Big School Clean across the UK. The Great Big School Clean is part of the Great British Spring Clean, the country’s biggest, mass-participation environmental campaign. So far over 1,100 schools have signed up, between them hosting over 4000 clean-ups with 89,036 students taking part! Why should schools take part? As part of the Great Big School Clean we are asking students to contact their local MP, businesses and neighbouring primary schools to develop strong links within the wider community and show that teenagers really do care about the state of their planet. Not only that, we will also be picking at random one participating school which will win £1,000 of Wilko vouchers to spend on purchasing resources and equipment. How can schools go about getting involved? We’re asking every school interested in taking part in the Great Big School Clean to register their clean-up at surveymonkey. co.uk/r/schoolclean2020. Once registered, schools will then be sent exclusive content and resources for secondary and sixth form, which will enable your students to take the lead when planning clean ups. We’ll also provide you with advice and guidance as to where you can borrow litter picking equipment from. Why does the Great Big School Clean take place during the Easter school holiday? This is deliberate – we don’t just want students to pick litter in school, but also take the message home to family and friends during the holidays, so that as many people as possible are aware of the amazing work your students are doing. We’ve even set a ‘homework’ task, and are encouraging students who are old enough to share their Easter holiday clean-ups on social media using the hashtag #GBSchoolClean. 30 SECOND BRIEFING For 25 years, young people have been empowered to drive change and improve their environmental awareness through the simple Seven- Step framework required to achieve the international Eco-Schools Green Flag. The Eco Schools initiative develops students’ skills, improves the school environment and creates financial savings, among other benefits. What should we do once the Great Big School Clean is over? At Keep Britain Tidy and Eco Schools, we try to demonstrate what can be achieved when a whole school community takes action against litter. We want to know how much you’ve collected, and how many people are standing up and saying, ‘No more!’ You can report your results via our feedback survey at surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ schoolclean-feedback. And, of course, bear in mind that any work you carry out for the Great Big School Clean can be used as evidence when applying for the international Eco-Schools Green Flag, the largest educational programme in the world – find out more at eco-schools.org.uk What’s the difference? + Eco-Schools is a global programme engaging 19.5 million children across 67 countries + 90% of Eco-Schools participants agree that the GBSC reduces the impacts of litter on the environment + After taking part, a further 84% say they have encouraged other people they know not to drop litter ABOUT LEE: Eco-Schools Manager for England at Keep Britain Tidy NEED TO KNOW- Q&A Contact: Info and tickets: 01942 612 639 eco-schools@ keepbritaintidy.org
