teachwire.net/secondary Why a trip to ZSLWhipsnade Zoo can provide your students with a wealth of cross-curricular inspiration THE Contact: 0344 225 1826 schools@zsl.org zsl.org/education WOW FACTOR Bring learning to life at the UK’s largest zoo, where students can head into the wilderness and come nose-to-nose with some of the world’s most endangered species. A trip to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is the perfect way to put current environmental issues into context, whilst empowering students to make a difference. Enhance your visit by adding a curriculum-linked workshop, taught by an expert team of learning officers. Explore how a trip to Whipsnade can link to your topic. BIOLOGY Explore the Zoo and discover the impact of the changing climate on animals across the world, through the lens of work undertaken by ZSL’s own scientists. Students can carry out their own research on the day by observing animals, attending live talks and reading interpretation. Why not add a Climate Change and Animals (KS3) workshop? GEOGRAPHY Journey across the globe with your students on a day trip to the Zoo. Extend their knowledge of the world’s countries and start to piece together how humans rely on the effective functioning of natural systems. Challenge your students to identify the challenges different countries face, and how these affect all animals. D&T Observe the various animal enclosures throughout the Zoo, and ask students to think about why different animals require different spaces. They will need to consider the welfare of the animal and the space that is available. Add an Enclosure Design (KS3) workshop, where students can design a new space for a species. ENGLISH Inspire your students to learn about why many species are under threat in the wild. Challenge them to gather facts from animals they’ve encountered in preparation for a class debate around the illegal wildlife trade. Consider adding our Wildlife Under Threat (KS3) workshop, where students examine real objects confiscated by HMRC. PA R T N E R C O N T E N T 68
