This competition for schools is part of our ongoing commitment to inspire more young people to pursue careers in science and engineering. FOSTER TOMORROW’S STEM SPECIALISTS Scientists and engineers have revolutionised our world. They’ve cured diseases, transformed communications and sent mankind to the depths of the oceans and into space. Yet despite their vital importance, the UK is presently unable to recruit the 124,000 engineers and technicians it requires each year (see bit.ly/ euk-state-18). Through The Bright Ideas Challenge, we hope to excite young people about the positive role STEM skills can play in society, and encourage them to become the engineers and scientists of tomorrow. Surveyed teachers who participated in The Bright Ideas Challenge in 2019, all agreed that the competition helped students become more aware of REASONS TO TRY… 30 SECOND BRIEFING The Bright Ideas Challenge is Shell’s free schools’ competitionfor 11- to 14-year-olds. The competition asks students to consider an energy problem that cities will face in 2050 and propose solutions using their creativity and STEM research skills. The competition also provides schools with an opportunity to supercharge their STEM provision by giving students access to a VIP STEM experience. This includes the chance to take their team’s ‘Bright Idea’ to the next level, at a professionally facilitated prototyping session hosted by Imperial College London. Of the 2018 entrants, 98% said they enjoyed taking part, whilst the same proportion of teachers said they would recommend entering the competition to a colleague. 5 Some amazing prizes are up for grabs. Schools can be in with a chance of winning a share of a £45,000 prize fund, as well as a VIP STEM experience.
