school-based programme is coming to the
end of its first year, and has been heralded
as a huge success by participating schools.
Designed to promote a challenging reading
experience thatmotivates pupils to read

participating schools aremeeting in clusters
for their exciting ChallengeDays, to pit their
wits against opposing teams in a contest
of knowledge, performance and creativity
– it will be a real celebration of all that the
children have achieved this year.
“The principles underpinning the
programme have been derived from
theDeveloping Excellence in Reading
Project,” explains Just Imagine director,
Nikki Gamble.
“High-attaining readerswere found to often
fail tomeet their full potential simply because
their book choiceswere limited. Children
met their potential when supported in their
choices and given opportunities to engage in
higher-level discussions. Thefirst year of the
programme ran in nine regions and has been
an enormous success.”
