In 1960 a group of Catholic women did something extraordinary. They organised the first Family Fast Day, asking people to “go without, so that others may have”, which led directly to the founding of the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD), the official aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales.

CAFOD aims to bring hope and compassion to poor and vulnerable communities, standing side by side with them to end poverty and injustice and bring about a better world.

At the centre of CAFOD’s work are seven principles of Catholic Social Teaching (CST), and the organisation has produced a unique range of radical resources and teaching tools that reflect these themes to support schools.

The beating heart of these materials is dignity and an understanding that every human being has an intrinsic value. The spectrum of resources available is deliberately challenging and does not shy away from any of the big issue questions and topics that shape our world.

In fact, these are positively embraced and approached practically and astutely – the belief that we are one precious, global family is palpable throughout.

There is an enormous amount of impressive resources on offer here, and it is all available to us for nothing! That’s right, free registration allows us to download everything – including informative videos, engaging animations, top teaching tools, punchy PowerPoints and PDFs, lively lesson plans, testing worksheets, active assemblies and prayers, fun games, weblinks, factsheets, learning hub, fundraising, campaigning ideas, posters, photos, textbook inserts, infographics and more.

CAFOD’s People of God 11-14 RE and GCSE in Religious Studies resources are a real bumper collection of contemplative materials that contribute dynamically to RE education by provoking stimulating questions about creation, meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, global justice, relationships, issues of right and wrong, and what it means to be human.

The GCSE RE resources include some outstanding teaching notes, smart teaching cards and highly absorbing, imaginative activities. Colourful, clearly written and packed with intellect, the teacher materials and supporting activities are quality-driven, diverse and daring.

High-quality RE makes a powerful contribution to young people’s learning; and CAFOD supports it with aplomb.
