High on the list of life’s social skills worth learning is that of staying alive - and helping others do the same. It is with this objective in mind that the British Red Cross has produced this interactive film resource.

Join your host (and class facilitator) Mark, and his friends Hannah, Alice and Keisha for a house party they’ll never forget.

As the party unfolds your class will be taken through the story of a night out; a journey that will have life or death consequences for one of the party goers.

‘Story of a night out’, not only teaches your class vital life-saving skills, it also tackles issues ranging from alcohol, risks, relationships and peer pressure. It is all packaged in a powerful, hard hitting story designed to engage your class in thought-provoking discussion.

‘Story of a night out’ links to the health and well-being ethos in schools, including the PSHE curriculum and contributes to the SMSC agenda as set out in the OFSTED inspection framework. Examples of where it links include:

  • An ability to make responsible and reasoned judgements on moral dilemmas.
  • A respect for others’ needs, interests and feelings, as well as their own.
  • An understanding of feelings and emotions and their likely impact.
  • Challenge the views of a group or wider community

By the end of the lesson your class will:

  • Be able to identify some of the risks associated with a house party and drinking alcohol
  • Begin to understand that peer pressure can be used positively or negatively to influence others; and begin to identify social barriers people have to helping others
  • Be able to identify the risks for an unconscious and breathing person who is lying on their back. Have the knowledge to give them ‘the pushover’ i.e. how to move them onto their side and tilt their head back to help them continue to breathe.

The resource is designed to be adaptable to different class lengths, including:

  • A 30 minute non-interactive version (without class discussions) but with all the same film content as the longer version
  • A 50 minute version - suitable for use with an interactive whiteboard - includes timed discussions, which can be lengthened or shortened depending on requirements, and is facilitated within the resource requiring minimal effort from the teacher.
  • A short practical demonstration of ‘the pushover’ which is facilitated within the DVD resource so there is no need to have prior knowledge of first aid.

The DVD version of ‘Story of a night out’ also includes lesson plans, schemes of work, teachers’ notes, an icebreaker and comprehensive supporting materials for all four UK nations including Welsh language supporting materials.

Warning: ‘Story of a night’ out contains some shocking scenes that your students may find disturbing. It is recommended that you watch the content to ensure it is suitable for your class.

Suitable for 14+ (key stage 4)
